Understanding the Signs of Suicidal Thoughts

When we hear someone’s death was by suicide, we are often shocked and can’t wrap our minds around why the person chose such an act.

We find it difficult to understand that suicide attempters do not want to end their lives. However, they have no clue where and how to get help.
By dying, they simply show the world how much they hurt.

People in their ignorance become disgusted and judgmental about the news by laying endless blame on those involved.
Living with a mental illness can affect someone’s quality of life, increasing the risk of suicide for a person. Someone severely challenged by mental illness can feel isolated, lonely, and misunderstood. Relationships can be difficult to maintain.

Most people do not realize that the person who took his own life may have had a mental illness such as depression. A person who suffers and dies from a physical illness, such as cancer, is in the same situation.

About half of all suicides are caused by depression. When someone struggles with depression, it can be difficult to say the words out loud.
The majority of people facing this illness present a decreased quality of life due to increased financial and physical stress.

People often suffer from financial difficulties because they cannot maintain a job. This is the point where they feel abandoned with no one to turn to.
Depression makes people feel worthless, useless, meaningless, a burden on others, and most likely a social outcast. Sometimes, they drop hints or engage in behaviors that show they are depressed, and sadly, people miss those signs.

If no blame is apportioned to someone for dying of cancer which is a physical illness, then why would you then blame and judge someone whose depression pushes them to suicidal thoughts and eventually suicide?
Wouldn’t it be better to consider the individual’s perspective in his struggle before suicide?

A lot of people have been wondering and asking questions about what could cause someone to die by suicide. People can be confronted with challenging life stressors, which if not handled well can drastically increase the possibility of suicidal thoughts and death by suicide.

Here is a real-life story. Donald, a businessman, was successful and wealthy until his business spiraled downward.
Although Donald’s immediate family could provide all the financial assistance and support he needed, he was too ashamed to ask them for help. He has always spent more cash than everyone else in his family, so bringing himself to that level to ask for some cash was impossible for him. His family was unaware of his financial struggles and always thought everything was fine. Without realizing it, he was already $10,000 in debt, without any idea where the money would come from. He gradually slipped into depression and anxiety.

His immediate family noticed something wasn’t right and his behavior was erratic. However, when he was approached, he denied having any challenges, especially financial challenges. This is because he was too ashamed to admit all his money was lost. He thought he would lose all that respect and regard his family had for him if anyone found out how broke he had gone. He cherished his dignity more than his mental health. In addition, he didn’t want to burden his immediate family. He wanted to face his challenges alone.

Donald tried to hide his misfortune behind a fake smile and a stylish outfit; unfortunately, depression had taken a toll on his old self. His night sleep was no longer what he looked forward to because that had eluded him. Days would go by without Donald taking his morning bath. Each morning he wonders if bathing is necessary.

Preoccupied with sadness and emptiness, Donald got up in the middle of the night to do the unthinkable. Putting on shorts and a shirt, he drove straight to the river in his car. He then jumped off a bridge into a local deep and fast-flowing river. Later in the day, his car was found with a suicide note in it. In his suicide note, he narrates how he was gripped by unrelenting sadness and hopelessness that made him feel trapped in a dark tunnel. Failed businesses and debt plunged him into deep sadness, hopelessness, and persistent thoughts about ending his life.

What was the point of still living when he lost the sweet taste of a happy life?
Here is a man who completely lost hope and couldn’t cope with living.
When faced with a situation like this, despair always triumphs over logic.

Depression usually manifests itself in such a way that the individual cannot counter negative thoughts and emotions.
The victim’s entire being is trapped in a seemingly endless dark tunnel with no hope of seeing the light.

All he could see and feel in that situation was pain and hopelessness. Imagine a dark world filled with hopelessness, listlessness, loneliness, sadness (profound sorrow), despair, suppression, and guilt, all packaged into one.
Within his existence is this sense of doom.
In his world, it seems he has no one to talk to, no one to trust, and a lot of rejection from people who once cared.

Getting out of bed every morning suddenly becomes a very difficult task because there’s nothing to look forward to in life.
He is conscious and feels pain when he wakes up. Sadly, he doesn’t want to be conscious, whether asleep or dead.

The world suddenly seems unfair. No one listens or cares anymore. He is left numb and detached from his emotions.
He wants to stop experiencing pain he cannot control. This pain eventually becomes so difficult to cope with that contemplating even one more day seems unbearable.

At this point, his death becomes the only thing that gives him peace. He wants someone to come over and snuff him out. He wants a peaceful death.
Gradually, his mind creates a world better without him. After all, nothing matters in life.

If you suddenly find your mind occupied with suicidal thoughts, you need to realize that that feeling of depression, suicidal thoughts, and the endless dark tunnel you find yourself in every night isn’t your true reality. Your true reality is that version of you in your happiest moments. When the atmosphere is pleasant.

You can silence the negative voice that tells you no one cares. That you are a burden to those around you and that everyone’s lives would be easier and better if
You might feel you cannot, but you can if you try.

Instead of ending it all with this drastic action, ask for help. Help must not always come from family members.
You will be amazed at how your family and even random people will offer you a ladder to climb out of the ditch you find yourself in. The same people you think don’t care.
Nobody will know your story, struggles, and pain unless you open up. When you open up, someone can help you through tough times. No one deserves to live alone.

Your loved ones and friends would prefer confronting them with your burdens rather than subjecting them to emotional and physical pain due to your suicide.
Suicide has never been a solution to anyone’s problem. Instead, it is an unfortunate event that will leave your family and loved ones in regret and change their lives forever.

You need to understand that turbulent times can be challenging. To face this challenge, one needs to ride the emotional waves through activities such as mindfulness exercises, journaling, and conversation with someone. These are some of the things that can help suicidal thoughts subside.

When someone you know who used to be bubbly is thrown into severe sadness or moodiness, it is time to get close. You need to look for depression and suicidal thoughts. This form of sadness is long-lasting, accompanied by mood swings and unexpected rage.
When a once bubbly person chooses to be alone and withdraws from friends or social activities, it may be an indicator of impending tragedy. These are possible symptoms of depression, a leading cause of suicide. Someone with these symptoms will also lose interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed.

You may also notice sudden calm after a period of depression or moodiness. This can be a sign that the person has decided to end his life.
Once you notice changes in the personality or appearance of someone who used to be a competent dresser, it could be an indicator that they are considering suicide.
