Silent Battles: The Untold Struggles of Men Seeking Help

You are currently viewing Silent Battles: The Untold Struggles of Men Seeking Help

They laugh, they lead, they support, they lift others up. But when the weight gets heavy, who lifts them? Beneath the surface of everyday lives, countless men are quietly fighting invisible wars — with anxiety, grief, loneliness, or trauma. Not because they’re weak, but because they were taught to be silent. To be strong. To “man up.”

Masculinity is a major concern these days, which enables a man to hide their emotions, battles, and feelings. A man who works hard all day can’t share his daily struggles with his family, friends, or even his spouse. As a society, we play a major role in the situation that leads men to seek help, as they face multiple challenges each day. Society and his family raised him with the belief that “Men don’t cry, What does that phrase mean? A physically fit man, but he is facing challenges in his life, which will lead him to anxiety, depression, trauma, panic attacks, and even suicide.

The Hidden Cost of Masculinity: Why Men Suppress Emotions

From childhood to adulthood, parents and our society have conditioned men to suppress their emotions and never to request help. Millions of men are experiencing loneliness and emotional trauma behind closed doors, with no one turning up to them.

A Man’s Unseen Daily Burden

A man who works the whole day or the whole week as a caregiver to his children, spouse, and parents. He feels exhausted each day, but he can’t say “NO” to his responsibilities, such as taking children to the play area, taking ill parents to the doctor, and many more.  Living with the silent battles, he had to stand up every day for work. Considering corporate life as an example, a salesperson can be bashed by his superior each month because he didn’t meet his targets, dirty politics within the employ circle to pull a single individual away, work pressure, daily tasks, responsibility pressure, and many others; all these are the battles that every man faces each day.

I’m Fine: The Most Dangerous Lie Men Tell

Every time you ask a man, “How are you?” or “How’s it going?” He will always reply with the exact phrase, that I am fine, but the bitter truth is he is not fine at all. Men fight silent battles because no one asks twice. They always feel like giving up or breaking up at particular instances; they don’t seek or cry for help. They try to hide behind the curtains, cry alone, wipe their tears, and step out smiling. https://mypsycheandyours.com.ng/7-misconceptions-about-mental-health-debunking-these-myths/

Why Men Don’t Ask for Help

Men are not comfortable seeking help from anyone because they feel they are physically strong enough to handle these kinds of circumstances. Whereas a woman gets the collective support of her husband, friends, and family. But regrettably, men don’t trust this circle.

Every day, a man meets his family and friends normally, but maybe they are carrying a burden that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

A Real-Life Story of Sacrifice and Silence

Taking the example of my close friend, who left his country  to a foreign country with the burden of financial responsibility. He left his lonely father in search of a good life for his spouse and children. He faces many challenges that he can’t share with his family or even his friends. Living alone in another country is quite challenging, and without children and a spouse makes it even worse. He never responds to any conversation in his friends’ circle, until one day he broke down and took me on a call, but still he did not tell me the whole story of the battles, because he is built that way. The societal pressure is real these days.

No one talks about the battles of a man. Discussing this can be taken as a weakness, leading to embarrassment and shame. Rather than seeking help, men turn to different distractions, like the consumption of alcohol, to manage their stress. But by doing this, men can have many behavioural changes which are detrimental to others, especially for their spouses and children.

Alex Karras quotes that “It takes more courage to reveal insecurities than to hide them”. Today’s society encourages woman more in terms of their struggles, depression, anxiety, etc. Because conversations surrounding self-esteem and body image are more centred towards women as compared to men. To balance family and work life equally is very hard these especially in those circumstances when you are in a relationship and do not receive support from your partner.

Roles of a Man as a Son, Husband, Father, and Brother

The sacrifices of man are different and vast, spanning from the role of a husband, brother, son and father. Each defined role comes with its distinctive set of expectations and challenges. The role of a son carries a burden of his father’s expectation to be successful, whereas as a father, their role is to be the provider. The role of a husband is also a provider and a protector to his spouse. As brothers, society expected the role of a pillar or a support system from a man to his siblings.

All the aforementioned roles demand sacrifices each day, which often go unappreciated and unobserved. Yet, a man continuously put his true commitment and dedication to others above his own. These efforts can lead to gradual erosion, which can result in various challenges to a person’s mental health.

Fyodor Dostoevsky, the Russian literary giant, quoted an advice reflecting a mother’s wisdom that “When your father comes home in the evening, bring a smile and joy on his face because the outside challenges are becoming harsher for men”.

Growing up between the stereotypes, gender equity challenges, and society’s expectations, it is taken as a weakness if men have emotional issues. Being vulnerable is scary for each individual, but particularly for men. They are told not to show their fear and battles, because if they do, then how can they be the hero who saves the day?

What Therapy Statistics Tell Us About Men’s Mental Health

A report compiled by Country Director Joseph Daniel Sukali stated some data regarding men’s battles, which are leading to serious issues. This report reflects 102 therapy sessions out of 142 men enrolled. From financial instability to relationship crises, job loss, and unhealed trauma, all mean suffering from silent battles that they can’t even name. Findings suggested that 39% of participants took therapy sessions for relationship issues, 26% for job loss or financial challenges, 13% for grief and loss, 9% for substance abuse issues, 8% for depression and anxiety, and 5% for identity challenges.

A man who is breaking inside, but he cannot ask for help easily, even to his mother. He cannot even cry in front of his father because his father built him that way. Every day, a man experiences his nights might be filled with his unseen tears, a broken heart full of unfulfilled wishes, and silent battles.

Final Thoughts

From all the above-mentioned crises, many men are suffering from emotional breakdowns, which is making them weaker every day. Headache, chest pain, and disturbed sleep-wake cycle are the common symptoms in men that often go untreated, unspoken, and misunderstood.

These stresses can be reduced or lowered by getting emotional support from the man’s family. Small good gestures like appreciation, a listening ear, and a warm greeting can be helpful. Creating a balanced environment where a man is understood and valued can help them recharge and rewind. Promote open communication in a family setting so that he can communicate his feelings and battles, which can help to strike a balance, making it easier for him to handle both work and family life. Identifying the efforts made by men and showing compassion towards them can foster a supportive home setting. Acknowledging their sacrifices for their family can help them feel at ease and comforted.
